Does your child still cry when going to nursery or school?

Does your child still cry when going to nursery or school?

20% percent of children struggle to settle in at nursery or school.

It takes an average of 2 to 4 weeks for children to settle in their new classroom environment.

I know this first hand as my daughter is currently struggling to settle. Normally she is more than happy heading into school but the last couple of weeks we’ve had tears at the door and complaints of a sore tummy, hoping for a day at home.

Here are 5 strategies that the neuropsychologists recommend to help children and parents during the adaptation period:

1. Prepare and talk in advance:

Familiarise your little hero with their new environment by visiting their new classroom and teacher. Talk to them about what to expect from the day and discuss the change in a positive way. Focus on the exciting aspects such as making friends and fun activities.

2. Establish routine:

Children thrive on routine, so establish a consistent daily schedule that reflects what they will experience at nursery or school. Regular wake up times, meal times and bedtime routines will help them feel more secure and less anxious.

3. Encourage independence:

Develop your child's independence by getting them to do simple tasks such as getting dressed themselves or getting them to pack their bags. This will build their confidence and prepare them to be more self-sufficient.

4. Prepare them for separation:

Separation anxiety can be a real issue, especially after a long summer together. Try to get your little hero used to saying goodbye and being away from you so that they can recognise that you will be coming back. If your child is struggling, acknowledge their feelings and offer comfort but try to avoid long goodbyes as this can make them feel more anxious.

5. Create a supportive environment at home:

Reinforce the nursery/ school experience at home by incorporating similar activities. Read books about school, play school-themed games and talk about their daily experiences.
