Top Tips to Help Manage Screen Time with Your Little Heroes
In our last post, we talked about the issues with screens affecting our little Heroes. Here we can share with you the TOP tips to help manage the screen time.
How can we help our little Heroes find a balance?
-
Set Clear Limits:
Establish age-appropriate screen time limits. The American Academy suggests no screen time for children under 18 months (except video calls) and no more than 1 hour for children aged 2 to 5 years old.
- Use timers to enforce limits and remind children when their time is up.
- Set up times and areas in the house that are screen-free.
You can discuss and include your children in this decision-making process so that they feel involved and empowered.
-
Monitor what your children are watching:
Focus on educational and age-appropriate content. Encourage activities that promote critical thinking, such as puzzles or interactive learning games. As opposed to endless consumption, such as youtube videos, which may also have harmful or inappropriate content that may negatively impact your child.
3. Balance screen time with Active Play:
Help your children to reduce their screen time by encouraging physical activity and creative play such as drawing and reading. Set goals and rewards such as an hour of outside physical play allows a limited amount of screen time.
-
Lead by example:
Children mirror our behaviour. Set screen free time for everyone. Try to pick a place where you keep your phones, such as a drawer or shelf so that you are fully present when with your little Heroes.
-
Encourage Open Communication:
Discuss online experiences and strategies with children and encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings. Help them to understand why you are making your decisions.
By fostering healthy habits and setting boundaries, parents can ensure that screens are used in a way that benefits their child’s development rather than hindering it.
